Annoying
I went to the doctor today to get checked up on my incision (which is finally healing properly!) and was very annoyed when I felt pressured into using birth control that I know nothing about and have no desire at this point in time to try. The doctor seriously acted as though I was ignorant when I told him that I don't feel comfortable using the pill because of how many of my friends have complained about it. (Mostly the mood that it tends to put people in) He rolled his eyes at me. Really? I think it is MY body and MY choice....then he shoved a Mirena flyer in my face and told me to read up on it and come back in three weeks to talk about it....then he left the room. ....... uhm ok then. The nurse came back in and told me we were all through and told me to come back in 3 weeks. I told her I was not coming back because my insurance is through cobra right now (which is soooo expensive) and I didn't intend to pay for another month of it just to come back. She insisted that I come back in three weeks. Just. for. birth control. options. SO all I got from this visit is that they want to get more money out of me. If that was not there intention they did not do a very good job of communicating that to me. ANNOYING!

That SUCKS. One of my biggest frustrations with women's health is women being given a hormonal birth control method without having the whole story. I loved the Teen Clinic we had in California (I was the supervisor) but it amazed me how many teens were given hormonal birth control (which definitely has risks) and weren't counseled on the necessity to take it at the same time every day, the risks, how many pills you can miss before it's not effective... all of that. Drives me crazy.
You should definitely read up on Mirena. I know a lot of people that love it, but there are risks such as heavier periods (although eventually your periods will most likely stop), the possibility of expulsion or even, in severe cases, perforation of the uterus. If you were looking at a birth control pill, I'd suggest a mini-pill, which just progesterone. You'd need to take it at the SAME TIME EVERY DAY, however. I'd set your phone timer to go off at the same time every day.
Birth control is always hard after birth, I hear. You don't want to worry about synthetic hormones in your milk supply, but you don't want to get pregnant again, and you can't trust your cycles until they regulate.
I personally love the Fertility Awareness Method, but it does require taking your temp each morning, as well as using condoms/diaphragms during your fertile time, or abstaining. We've used it for almost a year now and I love not being on hormones. It's not for everyone, however.
I'm sorry you had to deal with that, it's super lame. If I were you, I'd call around to some clinics to see if they did sliding scale. You may even want to consider Planned Parenthood, they have pretty reasonable rates I'm told. It's hard not to think bad of them, but abortions are only a very small part of what they do; most of the time, it's giving women affordable birth control and checking them for STI's and doing paps.
Hahaha sorry that was such a long comment!! I feel very strongly about birth control.
I use NuvaRing. I like it, lower hormone levels and it's pretty low maintenance. But of course what works for me may not always work for you.
Wish I could help more. Oh, and by the way, that doc is an ass. Rolling his eyes at you? Seriously lame.
Totally not cool! Sorry your OB is being a pain about this. He/she should always be your ally in finding what's right for YOU. Read up and pray about it--there are so many opinions, and I heard some news thingie the other day about how any hormones can cause a new list of things. Made my head spin! But God's in control, and you make the decision that makes sense for you and your situation, and wow, maybe you just need a new OB for next time. Wait, did I just say next time? :) Love you!
